Bottarga: a culinary voyage to the Aegean heart on King’s Road

Bottarga, opened in late 2024 by the acclaimed Pachamama Group, is a heartfelt tribute to the vibrant cuisine of Greece—a true culinary love letter.

From the moment you step inside, Bottarga captivates with its luxurious backdrop of classic European interiors, where sophistication meets comfort. The thoughtful design creates an atmosphere that is both grand and inviting, perfect for an intimate dinner or a lively gathering. For those who relish al fresco dining, the iconic King’s Road terrace stands as a delightful feature, meticulously designed for comfort and enjoyment, regardless of the season. This seamless blend of Aegean inspiration and European elegance sets the stage for a truly memorable dining experience.

The philosophy at Bottarga is clear: emphasis on shared plates and bold profiles. This approach encourages diners to embark on a communal flavour journey, mirroring the convivial spirit of Greek dining. Each dish is a testament to the kitchen’s dedication to quality ingredients and authentic, yet refined, preparation.

Commencing with the Pita bread and Tzatziki with dill oil. The pita arrived warm and wonderfully soft, serving as the perfect vehicle for the creamy and cooling tzatziki. What truly elevated this classic was the aromatic dill oil, infusing a fresh, herbaceous brightness that made each bite a delightful prelude. Following this, the Bluefin Tuna appeared, a vibrant composition of pristine fish complemented by sweet, smoky roasted red pepper and a zesty squeeze of lemon. The freshness of the tuna shone through, balanced by gentle acidity and earthy undertones.

A true highlight is the Bottarga Orzo, described as the “hero dish” was a revelation and a definite signature dish. The rich depth of XO oil combined with the unique, briny burst of bottarga created an umami-packed symphony, enveloping perfectly cooked orzo in a truly unforgettable flavour profile. It was bold, distinctive and deeply satisfying

The Grilled Artichokes are an exemplary dish showcasing Bottarga’s innovative spirit. Tender, char-kissed artichoke hearts were crowned with a light and airy whipped Xinotiri – a traditional Greek cheese that brings a delightful tang – and finished with the earthy luxury of truffle. This combination transformed a simple vegetable into a sophisticated culinary experience. The Grilled Vegetables, a colourful medley of red and green peppers, aubergine, courgette and tomatoes, offered a taste of pure, sun-ripened goodness. Expertly grilled to bring out their natural sweetness and subtle char, they provided a wholesome and flavourful counterpoint to the richer offerings.

Equally impressive was the Lemon Chicken, featuring tender, succulent chicken brought to life by a delicate lemon thyme emulsion. The emulsion imparted a fragrant, herbaceous brightness that uplifted the dish without overwhelming the natural flavour of the poultry.

No Greek-inspired feast is complete without a decadent finish, and Bottarga delivered with its Chocolate Burnt Cheesecake. This dessert was a symphony of textures and flavours: a creamy, rich cheesecake with a perfectly caramelized top, elegantly paired with rich salted caramel chocolate. Each spoonful was a journey into pure indulgence. To complement our meal, we sampled the Ambrosia Martini, a truly unique and sophisticated cocktail. The tropical tang of passion fruit married beautifully with crisp vodka and a hint of sweet grape and warm vanilla, creating a balanced and refreshing libation that mirrored the innovative spirit of the cuisine.

The wine list at Bottarga features a thoughtfully curated selection of vibrant wines that showcase the rich diversity of Mediterranean viticulture. It will celebrate indigenous varietals, while also including renowned names in European winemaking. Each wine has been carefully chosen to complement a variety of dishes on the menu with every aim to enhance the overall dining experience.

Bottarga is not merely a restaurant; it’s an authentic and heartfelt homage to the Aegean islands’ culinary heritage. From its inviting ambiance and impeccable service to its meticulously crafted menu, every detail has been considered to transport diners on a Mediterranean journey. For those seeking bold flavours, a convivial atmosphere, and a taste of genuine Greek warmth infused with contemporary luxury, Bottarga on King’s Road is an essential destination. It truly is a love letter to Greek cuisine, beautifully written and delightfully delicious.
