Cinema Made in Italy: ten spectacular films hit South Kensington for iconic Italian film festival

From the 20th to 24th of March, organised by Cinecittà in collaboration with the French Institute in London and The Italian Cultural Institute, the 14th edition of the Italian festival is coming to Ciné Lumière in South Kensington

Over the years the festival has made a mark for showcasing the hottest and most talked about Italian films of the moment with a great classic to accompany. This edition features ten new releases and the restored version of classic masterpiece, Bellissima by Luchino Visconti, all curated by producer and Chief Executive of Film London, Adrian Wootton.

Standouts include Alice Rohrwacher’s ‘La Chimera’, a story centering on a young British archaeologist who gets involved in an international network of stolen Etruscan artifacts during the 1980s, and Paola Cortellesi’s ‘There is Still Tomorrow’, set in 1940s Italy and follows Delia breaking traditional family patterns and aspiring to a different future, after receiving a mysterious letter that pushes her to reverse gender roles. It also made headlines in beating Barbie to become the highest grossing film in Italy last year.

Director of Ciné Lumière, Diane Gabrysiak, highlighted that 50% of the films included in the lineup are directed by women with 30% being debut features. Commenting on the lineup Gabrysiak said: “Alice Rohrwacher’s ‘La Chimera’ is a real standout, Rohrwacher’s distinctive voice is made for Italian cinema. She is able to merge childhood memories into universal narratives, juxtaposing the contemporary world with traces of Etruscan history. It promises to be a thought-provoking and visually stunning experience.”
