Just off Brick lane, Oranj is the sort of restaurant that resists easy categorisation. There are nods to the Mediterranean, flashes of Spain, hints of Asia and an unmistakably contemporary London sensibility, yet nothing feels forced or contrived. Instead, the kitchen works with confidence, allowing exceptional ingredients and thoughtful technique to dictate the menu rather than adhering to a single culinary identity.

The room reflects the food. Warm timber, soft lighting and an open kitchen create an atmosphere that feels relaxed without sacrificing polish. There is an infectious energy to the dining room, but never enough to interrupt conversation, while the service strikes that increasingly elusive balance between knowledgeable and informal.

The meal began with the Chilli Crab Croqueta, a beautifully crisp shell giving way to an indulgently creamy filling rich with sweet crab. The accompanying mango chutney introduced gentle sweetness, while pickled jalapeños brought just enough acidity and heat to sharpen every bite. It was playful without becoming gimmicky, setting the tone for the courses that followed.

Equally impressive was the Hispi Cabbage, proof that vegetables receive as much care here as any premium cut of meat or fish. Charred until the outer leaves developed a gentle smokiness, the cabbage retained a satisfying bite, while anchovy butter delivered a deeply savoury richness that was balanced by a generous snowfall of parmesan. It was a deceptively simple plate elevated through precision and restraint.

For the main course, the Beef Cheek was the standout of the evening. Slow-cooked until spoon-tender, the meat collapsed effortlessly into a silky mash that provided comfort without heaviness. A shrimp sambal added an unexpected layer of complexity, introducing subtle spice and umami that lifted the richness rather than competing with it. It was an intelligent combination that demonstrated the kitchen’s willingness to take risks while remaining grounded in flavour.

Dessert continued the same thoughtful approach. The Blood Orange paired vibrant citrus with vanilla ripple ice cream and shards of crisp chocolate, creating a finale that was refreshing yet indulgent. The interplay between bitter orange, creamy vanilla and the satisfying snap of chocolate provided a clean finish that never overstayed its welcome.

To accompany the meal, the Smoked Tea Old Fashioned offered a sophisticated interpretation of the classic cocktail. The gentle smokiness lingered without overwhelming the spirit, complementing the deeper, savoury notes found throughout the menu and reinforcing Oranj’s attention to detail beyond the kitchen.

What makes Oranj particularly compelling is its confidence. There is no desire to overwhelm diners with elaborate presentations or excessive flourish. Instead, every plate feels carefully considered, every flavour intentional and every ingredient given the opportunity to shine.

Oranj succeeds by focusing on substance. Seasonal produce, assured cooking and understated hospitality combine to create a restaurant that feels both contemporary and timeless. It is the kind of place that rewards repeat visits, where the menu evolves with the seasons but the philosophy remains constant: thoughtful food, expertly executed, served in a setting that invites you to stay just a little longer.
